Nation’s Grief

cory
August 1, 2009 was a day to mark! This was the time when the Filipinos grieved for the loss of the Filipinos’ living symbol of democracy, the former President– Corazon C. Aquino. For more than a month, different masses were offered for her recovery as she battled with her Colon Cancer that got into her system more than a year ago. And I could say that she bravely fought against it. For sure her only son and daughters, as well as her relatives are grieving so badly. But knowing that their grief is shared by millions of Filipinos, that’s more than a consolation that they would thank for.

Why?

The epitaph of Benjamin Franklin, which he wrote himself, says..

“The body of Benjamin Franklin, like the cover of an old book, its contents torn out and stripped off its leather and gilding, lies here, good for the worms; yet the work itself shall not be lost, for it will, as he believes, appear once more in a new and more beautiful edition, corrected and amended by its author.”

But while the beautiful, corrected and amended edition is not yet in the offing, we have to contend with the frail and fragile form we are enclosed in: Our body. It isn’t sturdy when organisms smaller than the naked eye invade its defenses. It falters when air, drink, food and sleep are not provided for daily. It can have wounds and bleed, be poisoned, or strangled, or lapse into comas. It can die.
